Why we procrastinate decluttering
We’ve all been there – staring at an overwhelming pile of stuff, telling ourselves, “I’ll deal with this later.” But later turns into never, and the clutter keeps growing.
Why does this happen? Why is it so hard to just start?
The truth is, procrastination isn’t about being lazy. It’s about feeling overwhelmed, uncertain, or even afraid of making the wrong decision.
But the good news? You can break the cycle. In this post, I’ll share my personal journey from a chronic procrastinator to a decluttering coach, plus simple techniques to finally get started and stay consistent.
My personal story: from procrastination queen to decluttering coach
Once upon a time… there was the Queen of Procrastination – and that was me.
Why start now when you can stress about it later, right? (Spoiler: Wrong.)
I wasn’t lazy. I wasn’t even that busy.
So why did I keep putting things off?
Then I discovered the magic of decluttering and minimalism, and I finally asked myself: Why am I procrastinating?
- I was scared of failing.
- I was scared I wasn’t good enough.
- I was scared of wasting time.
- I was scared I wouldn’t reach my goal.
Then, something clicked. Every time I actually decluttered something, I felt a wave of relief.
Every item I let go of was a win.
Every space I cleared gave me clarity.
Every time I took action, my stress disappeared.
The same is true for procrastination. The hardest part is starting. But once you begin, that feeling of relief and satisfaction takes over – and suddenly, decluttering doesn’t feel so hard anymore.
The real reasons we put off decluttering
If you’ve been putting off decluttering for weeks (or months… or years), you’re not alone. Here’s what might be stopping you:
🔸 Fear of making the wrong decision
“What if I regret getting rid of this?”
This fear makes us hold onto things just in case, even if we haven’t used them in years.
🔸 Overwhelm
“I don’t even know where to start!”
When clutter has piled up, the idea of tackling everything at once is mentally exhausting.
🔸 Perfectionism
“If I can’t do it perfectly, I won’t do it at all.”
Waiting for the perfect time, system, or motivation keeps us stuck in inaction.
🔸 Emotional attachment
“This reminds me of a happy time…”
Objects can hold memories, but keeping everything from the past means there’s no space for the future.
Sound familiar? The key is to stop overthinking and just start. Here’s how.
How to overcome procrastination (practical techniques)
✅ The 5-minute rule
Tell yourself: “I’ll declutter for just 5 minutes.”
Once you start, you’ll likely keep going. If not, at least you’ve made a dent!
✅ The One-item method
Feeling stuck? Just get rid of one thing today. One item leads to two, then three… and suddenly, momentum takes over.
✅ The Future you trick
This is my favorite trick!
🔹 Imagine your future self in a clutter-free space.
🔹 Picture waking up to a clean room, feeling calm instead of overwhelmed.
🔹 Ask yourself: “Will future me thank me for doing this today?”
It’s so much easier to take action when you realize how good you’ll feel afterward.
How decluttering creates mental clarity
Decluttering isn’t just about having a tidy home – it’s about creating space in your mind.
✔ Less clutter = fewer distractions → You can focus better.
✔ A clean space = a fresh start → It gives you a sense of control.
✔ Letting go = emotional clarity → You release what no longer serves you.
Every item you remove removes a little mental weight, too.
Summary
If you’ve been stuck in a cycle of procrastination, remember this:
👉 The hardest part is starting.
👉 Small steps lead to big changes.
👉 Future You will thank you.
So, pick one tiny decluttering task today – even if it’s just clearing one shelf or deleting five emails. Once you feel that first wave of relief, you’ll want to keep going.
And if you need accountability or a step-by-step plan, I’m here to help!

Hi, this is Kasia!
I help people declutter their spaces, which I do entirely online.
My passion for decluttering was born out of a need to simplify my own life, and now I share it with others to help them feel relief, control, and joy in the space they live in.
I work with clients who feel overwhelmed by too many things and decisions, often putting them off until later. I help them move on and find order where they previously saw chaos.
